March 20: Steveston Cares — Japan Tsunami Relief Walk

At 2:46 pm on March 11, 2011 a magnitude 9 earthquake occurred off the east coast of Japan. The earthquake and 10m high tsunami it generated caused massive damage to communities and to a nuclear power plant on Japan's east coast around the city of Sendai. Over 8,400 have lost their lives, over 13,000 more are listed missing, and over half a million people have been displaced from their homes. There have been dozens of subsequent aftershocks including many magnitude 6 or higher.

Many Steveston pioneers emigrated from coastal Japan and Steveston has maintained strong ties with Japan ever since our town was founded 120 years ago, so this tragedy was felt very closely.

The Rotary Club of Steveston immediately organized an hourly 1 km walk through Steveston on Sunday March 20 from 10 am to 2 pm, pledged over $3500, and asked others to join us and donate to Japan tsunami relief. The Rotary Club of Richmond Sunrise have also pledged $3000 supporting our efforts.

We thank the Steveston community for turning out in the thousands on March 20, 2011, walking with us in Steveston, and donating $75,000 for Japan Tsunami Relief, showing that "Steveston Cares".

We will work with local community partners to ensure that all donations received are used for relief in a local fishing village in the Sendai area of Japan. We thank the City of Richmond, the Steveston Community Society, and the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, and all donors for supporting this walk.
