In July 2002, one month before the Tall Ship Festival, the Nippon Maru arrived in Steveton and was berthed at #3 Road because it drafts too much water to be berthed in Steveston Harbour.

The local Japanese community provided a barbeque for the crew, there were matches of judo and softball, and the Nippon Maru provided ship boarding and a sail drill attended by over 8,000 Richmond residents. Our club provided ship boarding security, and traffic and parking control.
As well as an impressive event and cultural opportunity, the City of Richmond and Rotary Club of Steveston also used the visit as practise for the upcoming Tall Ship Festival.
