The Rotary Club of Nelson BC in partnership with the Nelson Daybreak, Cranbrook, and Castlegar Rotary clubs and a District 5080 matching grant purchased a used BC Ambulance for shipment to the Honduras. The receiving club was the Real Minas de Tegucigalpa Rotary Club in Honduras for the medical authority in Gracias Regional Hospital.
Under the direction of Dr. Don Burgess, our Rotary Club of Steveston partnered by spending a day receiving the 21' ambulance and transferring it across town to Surrey for loading into a 40' container. With the mirrors removed the ambulance fitted with 2" to spare on either side and about 3" on top. We also selected a load of medical equipment and supplies and delivered them to Surrey, and filled the ambulance and the other half of the shipping container with them.
Upon container arrival in Guatemala, Nelson Rotary then oversaw negotiations with their customs, delivery of the ambulance and medical supplies from Guatemala to Honduras, and training of staff on maintaining the ambulance and sophisticated medical gear aboard — including a first lifesaving emergency call just hours after the ambulance arrived!
